One of the city's oldest cultural organizations, the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art traces its origins to the Madison Art Association, which was formed by a group of artists and art enthusiasts in 1901. In 1969, the Association merged with the Madison Art Foundation and shortly thereafter achieved accreditation from the American Association of Museums under the name Madison Art Center. The Art Center operated in the former Lincoln School on West Gorham Street until 1980, when the museum moved into its current location. In September 2003, the Art Center unveiled updated plans for a new Cesar Pelli-designed facility, scheduled to open in early 2006 as part of the Overture Center for the Arts. To mark this new chapter in the organization’s rich history, the Madison Art Center was renamed the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art.
