If there is a place in your mind's eye that can clearly picture the perfect Alaska- and you yearn for it- then come with us to Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. It is all here on the Kenai, exactly as you pictured it: hundreds of square miles of impossible beauty and bounty; a seemingly endless expanse of rolling forests, mountain meadows, hidden lakes, whispering streams, turquoise glaciers - and all of it teeming with rare species of North American wildlife... including some of the largest game fish on earth.
Welcome to historic Gwin's Lodge, one of Alaska's oldest traditionally built log roadhouse lodges. Celebrating it's 53rd year of service in 2004, Gwin's is built from Spruce logs harvested from the surrounding Chugach National Forest, and is a Kenai Peninsula landmark. Cutting, hauling and hand-peeling the logs in true pioneer fashion, Pat and Helen Gwin completed and opened the lodge on January 1, 1952. The lodge and our guest cabins were restored to their original condition in 1995 and in 2003. Located at the absolute heart of the Kenai Peninsula and along a portion of the Sterling Highway designated an "Alaskan Scenic Byway", Gwin's is the closest full-service lodge to the Kenai & Russian River's Confluence, the most productive Sockeye (Red) Salmon sport-fishery on Earth and the finest road accessible Rainbow Trout fishery in Alaska. The "Old Russian River Ferry", the predecessor to the current tethered barge of this world renown fishery, proudly rests besides Gwin's Lodge, restored by our staff in 1995 and in 2003 to it's original 1940's forest green colors. Together, the lodge and the ferry represent the pioneer spirit of a bygone era that independent Alaskans and visitors alike seek during visits to the beautiful Upper Kenai River area.
You can't compare it to any other competitive event in the world! A race over 1150 miles of the roughest, most beautiful terrain Mother Nature has to offer. She throws jagged mountain ranges, frozen river, dense forest, desolate tundra and miles of windswept coast at the mushers and their dog teams. Add to that temperatures far below zero, winds that can cause a complete loss of visibility, the hazards of overflow, long hours of darkness and treacherous climbs and side hills, and you have the Iditarod. A RACE EXTRAORDINAIRE, a race only possible in Alaska.

Anchorage, Alaska (January 2004) - Midnight Sun snags yet another medal for its ferociously smooth Arctic Devil Barley Wine at this year's Great Alaska Winter Brew and Barley Wine Festival. Midnight Sun claimed the 3rd Place Gold Pan for its 2002 vintage, which was split into various oak barrels (including bourbon) for aging then blended back before packaging. Like the Arctic winds that stormed fest-goers with subzero temps, four of Alaska's breweries swept the prize cache: Glacier Brewhouse (1st), Alaskan Brewing (2nd), Midnight Sun Brewing (3rd) and Sleeping Lady Brewing at Snowgoose Restaurant (Honorable Mention). Competing amongst twenty-plus barley wines, these Alaska breweries upped the ante for subsequent years' competitions. Cheers to Midnight Sun's brewers!!
